Cleaning the Fan Unit
- 1
Put on the anti-static wristband.
- 2
Remove the power source from the computer. Unplug it and remove any battery units.
- 3
Locate the fan unit. It is usually on the back of a tower computer and near the back or side of a laptop. This will be the area that you feel hot air blowing out of when the fan is working.
- 4
Remove the screws holding in the casing around the fan heatsink area -- the series of metal blades near the outermost part of the case -- with the appropriate screwdriver. Pop off the casing.
- 5
Clear out as much dust as possible with an anti-static cloth.
- 6
Place a toothpick between the fan blades to keep them from spinning.
- 7
Spray compressed air into the fan to clear out any remaining dust.
- 8
Remove the toothpick and reassemble the computer casing.
